On March 2, the UN General Assembly passed a resolution proclaiming the next ten years, 2011 through 2020, a Decade of Action for Road Safety. The resolution was introduced by the Government of the Russian Federation and was co-sponsored by numerous countries, demonstrating the support of the international community for the issue.

Sunday, November 15, 2009 is this year's World Day of Remembrance for road traffic victims. First established in 2007 by U.N. Resolution A760/5, every third Sunday in November is dedicated to road traffic victims and their families.

In response to a letter by Congressman Robert Wexler, Chair of the Congressional Caucus on Global Road Safety, the U.S. State Department issued a letter on April 22 in support of the U.N. Resolution calling for a Ministerial conference to be held in the Russian Federation on the topic of road safety in 2009.
