Having just returned from Rome, I can't say that I'm very impressed with the city's pedestrian infrastructure. Heavy traffic near historic sites and in the vicinity of the Vatican can make for difficult walking, as the pedestrian crossings are poorly controlled. Adding to the potential for dangerous situations is the number of foreign tourists driving rental cars who are unfamiliar with both the city and with Italian traffic rules and laws.
