U.S. Department of State

ASIRT encourages the State Department to undertake road safety efforts by:

  • Directing its embassies to facilitate the creation of road safety partnerships between ASIRT and local organizations throughout the world, especially in countries where the need appears to be the greatest.
  • Collecting and disseminating road fatality statistics by country and making information available on the U.S. State Department website.
  • Serving as a member of the Interagency Roundtable on Global Road Safety, participating in a series of forums with international visitors at the State Department and via teleconferences. Visiting delegations have included Vietnam, Russia and Egypt.

Statistics on citizen deaths abroad can be found on the U.S. Department of State's website.

U.S. Embassies

ASIRT has successfully advocated to have U.S. embassies providing improved information about road safety in host countries. ASIRT believes that U.S. embassies can serve as key partners in implementing road safety initiatives in other countries. In Turkey, for example, the U.S. Embassy in Ankara is instrumental in fostering and maintaining the relationship between civil society in the U.S. and Turkey on the issue of road safety (e.g. Rotary and ASIRT). The U.S. Embassy created an initial grant to offer intensive training in the internationally acclaimed Safe Communities road safety program to Turkish Rotary and community leaders. As well, in Egypt, ASIRT cooperates with the U.S. Embassy in Cairo to bring together road safety stakeholders from the business community, local NGOs, WHO, media, Ministry of Transportation, USAID, the Cairo Auto Club, Safe Road Society, and Rotary International to facilitate the development of sustainable road safety initiatives. Both embassies have also been very involved in activities for the First U.N. Global Road Safety Week in 2007 and World Day of Remembrance. This involvement by the U.S. Embassy in Ankara and the U.S. Embassy in Cairo serves as a prototype for U.S. embassies worldwide.
